The exposure and discussion of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) has taken the world by storm as of late. Suddenly many victims of this kind of personality have realized what they have actually been dealing with all along. Even the church is speaking about it – from a psychological point of view. But do you know where NPD actually gets its roots from? And what does that have to do with the queen? That’s what I will be covering in this post today.
Before we get into that, I need to give you a backstory so you understand what even qualifies me to speak about this personality disorder and the viewpoint I am about to take on this issue.
Strange Encounter
About ten years ago, I was following a certain ministry’s fasting-and-prayer program. It was rigorous and included fiery, warfare prayers. One night, during this program, I had a strange encounter while sleeping.
In my dream, I was approached by a really old woman who was dressed in black. She had long curled-and-painted talons for nails, red lips, wore jewelry, and had long black hair. Her pale complexion reminded me of death and her eyes were pitch black eyes. Evil protruded from her being and I could sense the hatred in her eyes as she hovered over me. She started clawing her bony fingers around my neck as I lay on my bed, but lost her grip. Just then I woke up and heard the words, "queen of heaven."
At this point I was not yet familiar with who or what the queen of heaven was or where it was in the scripture. I was frightened and confused by this dream encounter. Was this real? Was this entity going to return?
Thankfully, it did not. But from that point on, the Lord threw me into prophetic training (although I didn’t know it at the time). This included many personal battles of my own that would soon help me understand who and what the queen of heaven really was.
Who is the Queen of Heaven?
The children gather wood, the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven; and they pour out drink offerings to other gods, that they may provoke Me to anger. - Jeremiah 7:18
The queen of heaven was an Assyrian and Babylonian god who was known for fertility, sexuality, and war. Ritualistic worship to this false god included sexual immorality and divination. She is also known by the names Ishtar and Asherah / Ashtoreth.
In 1 Kings 18, we see an escalation of this false worship among God’s people to the point where a wicked queen called Jezebel, who worshiped this god and opposed worship to the true living God, killed many of God’s true prophets. She supported four hundred false prophets, and promoted divination and all manner of wickedness.
Now, therefore, send and gather all Israel to me on Mount Carmel, the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.” - 1 Kings 18:19
This is where we get the term ‘Jezebel spirit’ from. Because of the level of witchcraft used by queen Jezebel, we often refer to someone who wields powers of deception, divination and seduction to control and tear apart individuals, churches, marriages, etc., as having a Jezebel spirit. However, the real entity behind this wicked behavior was the principality known as the queen of heaven. Queen Jezebel became the host of this entity’s influence and her behavior aligned with its evil ways.
Okay, so what does all of this have to do with narcissism?
Spiritual Root of Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Well, around three years ago the Lord commissioned my mother and me to start mentoring and counseling women in the areas of prayer, inner healing and deliverance. What I started noticing is that 99% of the women the Lord was sending our way were dealing with Jezebelic relationships, environments, or were struggling with Jezebelic traits themselves. Through ministering to these women, I observed certain spiritual, mental, and behavioral patterns over and over again, which was consistent with the signs psychologists have listed for NPD. Over time, the Lord gave me even more insight into this personality type such as key signs to look for, how it starts developing in individuals, and dream symbols indicating when someone has this personality disorder and stronghold.
Here’s the thing though… Very few realize that these traits originate from the influence of the Jezebel spirit / stronghold.
If you take time to read through the account of Prophet Elijah and Queen Jezebel, you will notice by the things she did that she exhibited the signs of NPD such as self-importance, a lack of empathy, preoccupation with power, envy, seduction, a sense of entitlement, and the need for admiration. It’s interesting to note that her daughter Athaliah displayed the same traits as well as Heriodias.
Now, I know in recent times, the world has become more acquainted with NPD but strictly from a natural, behavioral viewpoint. And to an extent that’s good but I want to suggest to you that this limits the freedom an individual can receive when taking God out of the equation. Along with the emotional and mental effects that victims of narcissistic abuse suffer, there are spiritual effects also involved which need to be recognized and dealt with for actual freedom and healing. I will deal with this in later posts.
I would strongly caution believers (especially ministers) to stop jumping on the bandwagon and only speak about this personality from a natural viewpoint; we also need to address this spirit for what it is. Only God can truly give us discernment and wisdom on how to deal with Jezebel’s influence and witchcraft.
In saying this, I want to leave you with two points to remember for now:
1. The influence of the queen of heaven (aka the Jezebel stronghold) & NPD is one and the same thing!
2. There are spiritual repercussions in dealing with narcissists that affect your overall life. Not recognizing it leaves you wondering why you aren’t moving forward in certain areas of your life.
Let’s start looking at things with spiritual eyes again and put God at the center. We’ll start seeing greater freedom and healing in the destinies of God’s people.
Blessings,
